Nintendo’s announcement of a $70 Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 bundle for the Switch 2 has sparked excitement — and concern. Revealed during the September 12 Direct alongside the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie, the bundle includes remastered versions of the beloved Wii classics. However, early footage has left fans worried about possible graphical downgrades.

Originally released on the Wii in 2007 and 2008, Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel are widely considered some of Nintendo’s best 3D platformers. The first game was later re-released on the Switch as part of the limited-time 3D All-Stars collection.

On Reddit, user RedditRedditReddit64 posted side-by-side comparisons of footage from the Wii, the 3D All-Stars version, and the new Switch 2 trailer. The analysis suggests that some textures — like metal surfaces and soil — appear flatter and less detailed in the upcoming release. “Some textures are a clear upgrade, but others look completely washed out,” the user wrote, hoping the visuals are unfinished.

The post prompted mixed reactions. Some fans shared the concern, while others argued the differences could be due to video compression or that the footage wasn’t final. Optimists pointed to Nintendo’s strong track record with recent releases like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bonanza as reason to stay hopeful.

So far, Nintendo hasn’t commented on whether the graphics shown in the trailer represent the final version of the game.
