Everything you need to know about Heat 2 and the possible Leonardo DiCaprio connection
Heat 2, the long-awaited follow-up to Michael Mann’s 1995 crime classic, is still alive — and Leonardo DiCaprio may be in the mix. While Warner Bros hasn’t officially greenlit the project, Mann confirmed he's deep in development and hopes to shoot in 2026.
The sequel, based on Mann and Meg Gardiner’s 2022 novel, serves as both a prequel and sequel to the original film. It explores the early lives of characters like Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), while continuing the story after the events of Heat.
Mann has wanted to make Heat 2 for years, but things picked up after the book’s release. In 2023, he said it would be his next film and aimed for a 2025 release — though that timeline has slipped. Now, he’s focused on securing the budget, currently negotiating with Warner Bros. Originally seeking $200 million, Mann has reportedly brought costs down to $170 million — still high for the studio, which may seek co-financing from Apple.
The biggest buzz? Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly discussed starring in the film. While his role is unknown, insider rumors suggest he could play Otis Wardell, a new villain. If DiCaprio signs on, it could give the project the final push it needs.
Adam Driver, who worked with Mann on Ferrari, is also rumored to be in line to play a young McCauley, though Mann hasn’t confirmed casting.
As of September 2025, Mann said he’s “in the middle of budgeting, scheduling, [and] casting,” and looks forward to “possibly shooting in 2026.”
