Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne has addressed speculation about a possible second season of the Netflix series, making clear that the story is complete.

The drama, which starred Owen Cooper as a 13-year-old boy involved in a murder investigation, won six awards at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 14.

These included Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, as well as acting awards for Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, and Cooper, who became the youngest male winner of an acting category in Emmy history.

Despite its success, Thorne explained in a recent interview with CinemaBlend that there are no plans to extend the series. “There's gonna be no continuation. The Miller story, we think, is told,” he said, adding that he and the team may use the series’ one-shot filming style for a different project.

Thorne did acknowledge that there was “stuff you could do with Jamie as a character,” but stressed that the creative team felt the story they wanted to tell was complete.

He also dismissed the idea of shifting the focus to murdered schoolgirl Katie’s perspective, explaining, “It feels like we've finished telling [Jamie’s] story. People say it’d be brilliant to see Katie's perspective. And you’re like, well, yes, but maybe we are not the right people to tell Katie's story.”

The path to Netflix was not straightforward for Adolescence. Thorne and Graham originally pitched the show to Amazon’s Prime Video, but after initial praise, executives passed on the project. Netflix later picked it up after the creators wrote two additional episodes on spec.

With the first season now critically acclaimed and available to stream, Thorne has confirmed that fans should not expect Adolescence to return for a continuation.
