Kehlani has spoken out strongly against the rise of artificial intelligence in music after AI-generated artist Xania Monet reportedly signed a $3 million record deal.
Monet’s work is created by songwriter Telisha “Nikki” Jones using the AI platform Suno to generate the remainder of the production. While Jones supplies the lyrics, AI produces the instrumentation and delivery. For Kehlani, this represents a turning point that undermines creative authenticity.
Posting on TikTok, the singer said, “There is an AI R&B artist who just signed a multimillion-dollar deal … and the person is doing none of the work. This is so beyond out of our control.”
Kehlani emphasised that music created primarily by AI lacks the essence of human artistry. They warned of “empty, hollow, and creatively gutless” output, adding, “Nothing and no one on Earth will ever be able to justify AI to me. I don’t respect it.”
Concerns also included environmental impact and potential copyright disputes as AI tools replicate existing works.
The criticism comes amid wider debate in the industry, with some figures such as Will.i.am suggesting AI could expand creative battles and possibilities. Others, like Kehlani, argue it risks eroding the value of musicianship and craft.
Jones, however, defended her approach, explaining that the songs remain rooted in her writing. Her manager Romel Murphy echoed the sentiment, saying her artistry builds on a long background in poetry and creative expression.
He insisted that the record deal reflects the originality of her words, even if the delivery is driven by technology.
