New e-registration system for vehicles fails

The newly launched e-registration transfer system for all types of cars and motorcycles has failed right after its roll-out on 1 September 2025.

Between 1 and 20 September, the new system reversed transfers for 428 vehicles that had been sold and paid for in full, legally restoring ownership on paper to the former owners.

The app, developed under the Punjab Information Technology Board, requires the seller to record the vehicle registration number, the new owner's name and address, and confirm the transfer with biometric verification; the app then requires entry of engine and chassis numbers and the vehicle's full data. But users reported "numerous technical flaws," and the app failed to clear and retain ownership data, causing the automatic reversal. As a result, buyers now need the cooperation of the former owners to repeat the entire transfer process.

The glitches have prompted large numbers of citizens to halt vehicle transfer procedures under the Motor Vehicle Transfer Inspection System, causing the government to lose millions of rupees in daily revenue, according to department sources.
