Fans of Taylor Swift caused significant delays on the AMC Theatres app on September 19 while attempting to secure tickets for Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl. The 89-minute event will celebrate the release of Swift’s new album The Life of a Showgirl.
The AMC app displayed a message warning users of heavy traffic following the ticket release at 12:12 p.m. ET. The notice included a two-minute estimated wait time that persisted for over an hour.
It stated: “Thank you for your patience as we experience high traffic volume. We have proactively created this queue for all visitors. When it is your turn, you will have 10 minutes to begin your ‘Taylor Swift | The Official Release Party of a Showgirl’ ticket purchase or other online visit.”
AMC advised fans unable to access the app to visit local theatres or attempt again later. The demand also affected the purchase of tickets for unrelated films, with fans reporting difficulties in booking seats for regular showings.
The special programme will run from October 3 to 5 across all 540 AMC Theatres in the United States, coinciding with the album’s release. It will include the premiere of the music video for The Fate of Ophelia, the first single from Swift’s 12th studio album, alongside album commentary.
AMC confirmed that audiences will be allowed to sing and dance during screenings, though restrictions remain on standing on seats or blocking aisles.
The event will also roll out internationally on the same weekend in territories including Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand.
For countries not included in the initial rollout, screenings are expected later in October, with details to be announced around October 3.
