Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence set to star in Scorsese’s haunting new adaptation
Martin Scorsese has officially chosen his next project, and it is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of 2026. The legendary director will helm What Happens at Night, an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s haunting novel, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence set as the leads. Apple Original Films is reportedly in final negotiations to finance and produce alongside Studiocanal, with filming eyed for January.
The project brings together three Oscar winners at the top of their craft. Scorsese, who last worked with Apple on Killers of the Flower Moon, reunites with DiCaprio after a string of collaborations that includes The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street and Shutter Island. Lawrence, meanwhile, joins the director for the first time, bringing fresh energy to his oeuvre after earning acclaim in Die, My Love, which premiered at Cannes earlier this year.
Based on Cameron’s novel, the story follows an American couple who travel to a remote, snowbound European town to adopt a baby. Staying at a vast, nearly empty hotel, they encounter a bizarre cast of characters including a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman and a charismatic faith healer. As their world unravels, reality and illusion blur, echoing the disorienting tone of Shutter Island.
Patrick Marber penned the screenplay, having been attached since Studiocanal acquired rights in 2023. At the time, Scorsese was only expected to produce, but as other projects drifted away, he stepped into the director’s chair. DiCaprio too had been weighing several roles, including Damien Chazelle’s Evel Knievel biopic, before committing to this psychological ghost story.
The announcement has stirred excitement online, with fans celebrating the reunion of Scorsese and DiCaprio and expressing delight over Lawrence’s involvement. One user wrote: “Three Oscars, one director, one eerie story. This could be a masterpiece.”
With Apple in talks to close the deal and casting for supporting roles under way, anticipation is mounting. If all goes to plan, Scorsese will begin rolling cameras in early 2026, setting the stage for one of the most talked-about releases of the decade.
