Universal Pictures has announced that Joseph Kosinski—director of Top Gun: Maverick and F1—will helm a big-screen reboot of Miami Vice, scheduled for release on August 6, 2027. The film, inspired by the iconic 1980s undercover cop TV series, is set to begin production in 2026 and will be shot in IMAX.
Produced by Dylan Clark (The Batman) and Kosinski, with a screenplay by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer, the movie is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, who along with Michael Mann, executive produced the original series.
Unlike the 2006 Miami Vice film directed by Michael Mann and starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, this new adaptation will be a period piece, capturing the “glamour and corruption of mid-80s Miami,” the era when the original NBC series aired.
While Mann’s 2006 movie had a strong opening, it ultimately underperformed commercially and received mixed reviews, though it has gained a cult following in recent years. Rumors of a Miami Vice reboot have been circulating since 2014.
Kosinski’s version draws particular inspiration from the series pilot and first season (1984–85), where New York cop Ricardo Tubbs heads to Miami to find his brother’s killer and teams up with undercover detective James “Sonny” Crockett to take down drug dealers responsible for killing Crockett’s partner.
A key antagonist in the first season was Colombian cartel lord Esteban Calderone, whose operations spanned New York, Miami, and the Bahamas. The storyline centered on the hunt for Calderone, which could serve as the backbone of Kosinski’s film. Mann’s earlier movie also borrowed heavily from the show’s first season, especially the “Smuggler’s Blues” episode.
As noted in a 2006 review of Mann’s film, Miami Vice has always been polarizing: “Purists may dislike its departures from the original series, while fans seeking nostalgia or high-octane action might be disappointed. Those who appreciate dark, gritty cop dramas, however, will find much to admire.”
