Battlefield 6 developers explain why full destruction isn’t possible

Battlefield 6 brings back the franchise’s signature destruction mechanics — from blasting holes in walls to leveling entire buildings with tanks. But as many players noticed during the beta, not everything is destructible. While you can cause plenty of chaos, some structures remain untouched.
According to the developers, there’s a good reason for that. In a recent AMA following a gameplay session attended by Dexerto, the devs explained that key map areas are intentionally protected to maintain gameplay flow and help with player orientation.
Returning map Operation Firestorm was a point of discussion. While players can destroy a lot — including silos and gas tanks that now explode more dynamically — certain elements, like the smokestacks, remain undamageable. When asked if destruction will be expanded post-launch, Design Director Shashank Uchil confirmed, “Not for launch. We want to make sure we don’t lose important landmarks which help player orientation.”
Community Manager Kevin ‘T0TALfps’ Johnson added that each map has unique POIs (Points of Interest) that are key to maintaining map identity. “These buildings are protected from heavy degradation so players can navigate and orient themselves more easily,” he explained.
Maps Producer Claire Bromley also discussed the updates to Operation Firestorm, highlighting upgraded destruction and explosion effects. She pointed out a new gameplay feature — a button at the base of the main chimney that shoots fire to remove snipers camping above.
Despite the limitations on what you can destroy, the team has ensured the environment still feels immersive and reactive, with refined destruction across all buildings.
You’ll be able to explore Firestorm and other maps firsthand when Battlefield 6 officially launches on October 10.
