Could there be a ‘Gilmore Girls’ Christmas movie?
Lauren Graham is not ready to leave Gilmore Girls in the past. The actress, best known for her role as Lorelai Gilmore, revealed at the 2025 Emmy Awards that she already has a pitch in mind for a reunion that fans would find irresistible: a Christmas movie.
“I thought we were done with that conversation, and I realized we are not,” Graham said in an interview on the red carpet. She explained that a holiday film would feel right for the characters and for the show’s spirit. “What I could see making sense is a Christmas movie in the tradition of Downton Abbey or those kinds of shows that are over but then come together again, especially around the holidays. I think that would be very Gilmore friendly.”
She also pointed out that holiday programming in America often feels limited, noting with a laugh that “football is not holiday programming.”
The remarks came shortly after she reunited with co-star Alexis Bledel on stage at the Emmys. The pair reflected on their early days playing mother and daughter Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, and recalled how Gilmore Girls started out as a low-budget series with long, dialogue-heavy scripts before finding a passionate following.
Bledel remembered that the team “saved up all year long to have one snow episode,” while Graham joked that they sometimes lived off leftover cake from nearby shows filming at the same studio. Despite those modest beginnings, Gilmore Girls went on to span seven seasons from 2000 to 2007, later returning with the Netflix revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life in 2016.
Fans continue to discover the series through streaming, and its enduring popularity has sparked an upcoming documentary marking its 25th anniversary. Graham said she will not be participating since creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is not involved, but her hopes for a festive film suggest she still sees a future for the Gilmore family.
The idea of a Christmas movie has already stirred excitement online, with viewers saying it could become an instant holiday tradition if it ever makes it to screen.
