Celine Song's latest film 'Materialist' is being hailed as one of the most refreshing takes on modern romance this year. The drama follows Lucy, a New York matchmaker played by Dakota Johnson, whose carefully managed life is thrown into turmoil when she finds herself torn between two men: John (Pedro Pascal), her seemingly perfect partner, and Harry (Chris Evans), the flawed ex, who still lingers in her heart.

With its blend of romance, comedy, and emotional complexity, Song's film offers a contemporary look at the messiness of love and choice. Critics and audiences alike have praised its honesty in exploring relationships that are neither idealised nor purely tragic.

Johnson, Pascal, and Evans bring contrasting energy to the triangle, and their chemistry has helped fuel the film's cultural resonance. The film's reach has extended well beyond the cinema screen, partly through inventive promotion.

Johnson and Pascal's playful interviews, including appearances on Hot Ones and Vogue Rapid Fire, went viral, while a spontaneous on-camera kiss between them sparked millions of views on TikTok and Instagram..

Evans contributed with fan events and interviews, while Song herself brought prestige to the project by showcasing it at festivals from Cannes to Mallorca. Released by A24 and backed internationally by Sony, 'Materialist' was made on a modest $20 million budget

Since its rollout began in June, the film has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. Germany leads international markets with $5.4 million, followed by the UK ($5.2 million), Mexico ($5 million), Australia ($4.7 million), and Spain ($4.1 million).
