Getting Battlefield 6 to run on Xbox Series S was a struggle for devs

Last month, Battlefield 6’s open beta became one of the most-played titles of 2025 across both PC and consoles. But like many modern games releasing this year, BF6 had to launch on both the powerful Xbox Series X and the more modest Series S—and according to the developers, getting the game to run smoothly on the Series S was a major challenge.
In a recent interview with Kotaku, two of the game’s developers discussed the difficulties of bringing Battlefield 6 to various consoles. When asked about the Xbox Series S specifically, the devs acknowledged that the less powerful hardware presented unique obstacles—particularly in terms of memory limitations.
“The biggest challenge for us was dealing with the console’s limited memory,” said Christian Buhl, Battlefield 6’s technical director. “The Xbox Series S actually has less memory than even our mid-spec PC build. About 6 to 12 months ago, we started seeing frequent crashes on the Series S due to this.”
In response, the team prioritized memory optimization across the board. This not only improved performance on the Series S but also enhanced the game's stability and performance overall. While general optimizations benefited all platforms, Buhl noted that additional, Series S-specific tweaks were necessary.
“We were running extensive tests and gathering tons of data,” he explained. “Once we ran all our levels through the system and identified the issues, it took a couple of months to iron out the memory problems on Series S.”
Thanks to those efforts, Buhl says the game is now “super solid” and delivers a “smooth 60 frames per second” experience on Xbox Series S. Footage from the open beta appears to support that claim, showcasing stable performance even on the less powerful console.
