Sofia Vergara was absent from the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards after experiencing a sudden health issue that sent her to the hospital.

The Modern Family star revealed on Instagram that she was preparing to leave for the ceremony on Sept. 14 when she developed what she described as the “craziest eye allergy.” Vergara, 53, shared photos showing her right eye swollen as well as images of herself lying in a hospital bed while undergoing treatment. “Didn’t make it to the Emmys, but made it to the ER,” she wrote.

Although Vergara was not nominated this year, she had been scheduled to present the award for lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie. That category was ultimately presented by actresses Brittany Snow and Malin Åkerman, with Stephen Graham winning for his role in Adolescence.

The ceremony, held at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, celebrated standout television productions. Apple TV+ comedy The Studio led the night with four wins, bringing its 2025 total to 13. HBO Max’s The Pitt earned best drama series, Netflix’s Adolescence won six awards including best limited series, and The Penguin collected nine overall. The evening also featured political statements, memorable acceptance speeches, and a controversial comedy bit by host Nate Bargatze.

Vergara, who gained international fame through her role as Gloria Pritchett on Modern Family, has received multiple Emmy nominations throughout her career, including for the Netflix drama Griselda, but has yet to win. Modern Family remains tied with Frasier for the most best comedy series wins, each with five, according to the Television Academy.
