An explosion ripped through a café in Madrid on Saturday, injuring 21 people, three of them seriously, local emergency services said.

The blast struck around 3:00 p.m. (1300 GMT) in the Puente de Vallecas district, damaging a café on the ground floor and apartments above, officials added.

Deputy mayor Inmaculada Sanz said initial findings point to a gas leak but stressed the cause was still under investigation. Several residents from the building were among the lightly injured, while authorities evacuated nine apartments until the structure’s safety could be confirmed.

Photos released by Madrid’s civil defense showed shattered windows, collapsed walls, and a car damaged by debris. Firefighters, paramedics and police cordoned off the area as rescue teams worked at the scene.
