Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday directed all electricity distribution companies to immediately halt the collection of electricity bills for August 2025 from flood-affected regions across the country, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

The announcement was made during a high-level meeting convened to review the situation in areas impacted by recent flooding. The prime minister noted that a comprehensive relief package for these regions would be finalised after the conclusion of ongoing discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The premier further ordered that any August bills already paid by flood-affected consumers must be adjusted in the next billing cycle, providing direct financial relief to households grappling with the disaster.

“Millions of people have been displaced and affected by these devastating floods,” the prime minister said during the meeting. “In this difficult time, we are making every possible effort to ease the pain of our people.”

He added that both federal and provincial institutions remained fully mobilised in ongoing rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts.

“We will not rest until every flood victim has returned to their home,” he asserted, reaffirming the government’s commitment to long-term recovery.

Floods triggered by this year's intense monsoon rains and swollen rivers had killed at least 946 people in Pakistan since late June, and had inundated large swathes of agricultural land.

Authorities said the floods had submerged over 4,500 villages and affected more than 4.4 million people in the province since late August. They added that at least 2.4 million people had been evacuated so far.
