Fans of The Summer I Turned Pretty are debating how the Prime Video hit will conclude, with many speculating about the fate of Belly’s father, John, ahead of the series finale.
In the September 10 episode, John, played by, casually asked Laurel for Pepcid because of heartburn. While seemingly minor, some viewers believe the line could be foreshadowing something more dramatic.
One fan wrote on X, “Omg is Belly’s hot dad gonna have a heart attack. Why are we talking about chest pain. I’m kinda scared.” Another joked in a mock medical note: “Patient’s name is Belly’s dad. Age 53. Struck by anterior chest pain while trying to get back together with his ex wife… likely myocardial infarction.”
Although Jenny Han’s original book trilogy does not kill off John, the show has already diverged from its source material, especially regarding Belly’s love triangle with Conrad and Jeremiah.
Han herself confirmed there are differences in season 3, telling Entertainment Weekly earlier this year: “There are surprises. And there are things that aren’t exactly like the books.” She added that the ending would still be “satisfying.”
The author recently addressed the growing number of fan theories, acknowledging, “People are always picking up on stuff. There’s definitely some that people have not picked up on.” She also admitted not every online theory is accurate, but welcomed the engagement “It’s a privilege that people care enough to come up with their own theories.”
The series finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty will release on September 17 on Prime Video.
