Big Little Lies season 3 confirmed with Francesca Sloane as writer
HBO has officially confirmed that Big Little Lies season 3 is moving forward, with Francesca Sloane set to write the first episode and executive produce.
Sloane, known as co-creator of Amazon’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith, will join returning executive producers David E. Kelley, Nicole Kidman, and Reese Witherspoon. Kidman and Witherspoon will once again lead the cast of the acclaimed drama.
The announcement comes as Sloane signed a new two-year overall deal with HBO. Her involvement follows news that production on Mr. and Mrs. Smith season 2 at Amazon has been delayed indefinitely, leaving her available to take on one of HBO’s most high-profile projects.
Rumors about a continuation of Big Little Lies had circulated since late 2023, when Kidman hinted that a third installment was possible. Until now, no official confirmation had been provided by HBO.
The series originally premiered in 2017 as a limited series adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s novel. It quickly became a cultural phenomenon, winning multiple Emmy Awards including Best Limited Series, Best Actress for Nicole Kidman, and Best Supporting Actress for Laura Dern. Due to its success, HBO revived the show for a second season, which added Meryl Streep in the role of Mary Louise Wright.
The ensemble cast has also included Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, and James Tupper. Season 1 was based on Moriarty’s novel, while season 2 used original material from the author. A sequel novel by Moriarty is also scheduled for release in 2026, sparking speculation about its potential influence on the series’ future.
With Big Little Lies season 3 now confirmed, HBO is expected to release further details on production and casting in the coming months.
