James Gunn hints at alliance between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor in 'Man of Tomorrow'

James Gunn teases how the 'Superman' sequel will force Clark Kent and Lex Luthor to unite against a larger threat.

James Gunn has confirmed new details about his upcoming Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, revealing that the story will focus heavily on the unlikely alliance between Clark Kent and his long-time adversary Lex Luthor.

Speaking on The Howard Stern Show, Gunn said, “It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”

The director added that he is thrilled with Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Luthor, noting, “I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.”

The comments have fuelled speculation that Brainiac will serve as the main antagonist, with fans pointing out he is one of the few villains powerful and intelligent enough to require both Superman and Luthor to collaborate.

While Gunn did not confirm this, the possibility has already become a major talking point among DC audiences.

Gunn also praised Supergirl star Milly Alcock, calling her “the best bit of casting I’ve ever done in my entire life. She is absolutely stunning in the movie.”

Alcock is set to play a central role in the expanding DC Universe, alongside Jason Momoa who appears in Man of Tomorrow as the intergalactic mercenary Lobo.

Filming is expected to begin in April 2026, with the movie scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.
