The first trailer for Song Sung Blue has been released, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as a married couple who find new meaning in their lives through music.
The film, written and directed by Craig Brewer, is based on Greg Kohs’ 2008 documentary of the same name and follows the story of real-life Milwaukee musicians Mike and Claire Sardina, who formed the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder.
In the film, Jackman portrays Mike, a man searching for “something big, something new,” while Hudson plays Claire, who dreams of life beyond working as a hairdresser. Their journey together leads to the creation of their tribute act, performing classics such as “Cherry, Cherry” and “Sweet Caroline” by the legendary singer-songwriter, now aged 84.
Brewer, best known for Hustle & Flow, directs the project and co-wrote the screenplay. Kohs, who directed the original documentary, serves as an executive producer alongside Erika Hampson.
The synopsis describes the film as “based on a true story, two down-on-their-luck musicians form a joyous Neil Diamond tribute band, proving it’s never too late to find love and follow your dreams.”
Alongside Jackman and Hudson, the cast features Michael Imperioli, Ella Anderson, Mustafa Shakir, Hudson Hensley, Fisher Stevens, Jim Belushi and musician King Princess in her feature film debut.
The musical drama was first announced in October 2024, with filming wrapping by December. At the time, Hudson shared behind-the-scenes moments on Instagram, writing, “What a work hubby @thehughjackman. Can’t wait to share more.”
Song Sung Blue is scheduled for release in cinemas on December 25, positioning it for the holiday season.
