Spotify has officially launched lossless music streaming for premium subscribers in 2025, a long-awaited update that brings CD-quality sound to its platform.
The new feature allows users to stream music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC quality, offering uncompressed audio for enhanced clarity and depth.
First announced in 2021 as part of a promised “HiFi tier,” the rollout faced multiple delays due to licensing and technical challenges. Rival platforms such as Apple Music and Amazon Music introduced lossless options years earlier, leaving Spotify at a competitive disadvantage. CEO Daniel Ek had hinted in 2024 that the feature was still in development, and the launch now fulfills that commitment.
The global rollout began in September 2025 and will continue through October, covering over 50 countries including the US, UK, Germany, Japan, Sweden, and Australia. Subscribers will be notified in-app once the feature becomes available. Activation requires going to Settings > Media Quality > Lossless, and it must be enabled manually on each device.
Spotify’s lossless streaming is supported on Wi-Fi and cellular networks as well as offline downloads. However, Bluetooth devices are not compatible with FLAC due to bandwidth limits. Users can access the feature through Spotify Connect with compatible hardware from brands such as Bose, Yamaha, and Bluesound.
With nearly 100 million tracks available in lossless quality, this update closes a significant gap between Spotify and its competitors. While Bluetooth limitations remain, the launch strengthens Spotify’s position in the music streaming market and gives audiophiles a long-requested feature.
