RAWALPINDI:

The Punjab government has launched the Model Village Programme in Rawalpindi Division, under which civic facilities will be upgraded in 64 villages at an estimated cost of Rs8 billion.

According to Punjab Rural Municipal Services Company CEO Asadullah, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed immediate implementation of the programme. In the first phase, villages from Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, and Jhelum districts have been selected, benefiting a population of 285,000 people and 41,850 households.

In Rawalpindi Tehsil, the selected areas include Gujar Khan, Taxila, Kotli Sattian, and surrounding villages. He added that the PC-1 has been approved and work will begin next month.

Overall, 550 villages across 10 divisions in Punjab will be transformed into model villages under the programme, at a total estimated cost of Rs71 billion.

Asadullah further said that the Punjab Rural Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Project, launched with financial support from the World Bank, is already underway to provide clean drinking water, modern sewerage systems, and solid waste management facilities to rural communities.

He also highlighted rescue operations in flood-hit areas of Bhawana and Kot Momin, where timely action saved hundreds of lives.
