IShowSpeed visits great-grandfather Harold Watkins, first African American fire chief of Detroit

A viral video has shown IShowSpeed meeting his great-grandfather Harold Watkins, who he revealed was the first African American fire chief of Detroit.

In the clip, the popular streamer shared an image on his phone of an old article about Watkins before introducing him in person.

According to the Detroit Fire Department, “The first African American fire chief was Harold Watkins in 1988.” The department today has eight divisions ranging from firefighting to community relations, with around 821 firefighters across 46 stations in the city.

Fans quickly reacted to the video, praising the streamer’s family legacy. 

Tributes continued with users calling the moment “incredible legacy of leadership and community impact” and “royalty.” Another simply said: “Greatness.”

IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins, has long shared aspects of his personal life with followers. Born to Darren Watkins Sr in Ohio in 2005, he has spoken about his family background in interviews and streams. His father, Darren Sr, was born in 1983 to Larry and Elizabeth Watkins, and has a brother named Wayne Watkins.
