Giorgio Armani, the world-renowned Italian fashion designer, has died at the age of 91, his fashion house announced on Thursday.

“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the company said in a statement.

Armani was regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern fashion. Known in Italy as “Re Giorgio” — King Giorgio — he built an empire that generated annual revenues of more than €2.3 billion. His minimalist yet elegant designs redefined global fashion, combining comfort with sophistication.

The designer had been in declining health in recent months and was absent from his brand’s shows at Milan Men’s Fashion Week in June, marking the first time in his career that he missed a runway presentation. He had also been preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his fashion house during Milan Fashion Week this month.

Armani rose to international fame in the 1980s when his suits and red-carpet gowns became synonymous with Hollywood glamour. From American Gigolo to Julia Roberts’ iconic Golden Globes look, Armani’s creations shaped the image of elegance and power in both cinema and celebrity culture.

Cate Blanchett, Glenn Close, and Renée Zellweger were among the many stars who regularly wore his designs, describing his work as both empowering and timeless.

The Armani Group confirmed that a funeral chamber will be set up in Milan on Saturday and Sunday, with a private funeral to follow. His passing marks the end of an era, but his influence on fashion and style will remain enduring.
