Sabrina Carpenter has spoken candidly about beauty, ageing, and criticism in a new Interview Magazine cover story.
The 26-year-old singer discussed her outlook on appearance while addressing negative comments she has faced online. Speaking with Mel Ottenberg for the September issue, Carpenter said her sense of beauty comes from within rather than external validation.
“It’s usually pretty insufferable men that think I’m hideous, but when I think about beauty, it’s been about when I myself feel beautiful. It has nothing to do with other people,” she explained.
Carpenter also reflected on ageing, crediting her mother as a role model. “I haven’t really grappled with what’s going to happen as I get older, but my mom’s always been a natural beauty and always really encouraged me to just let it happen. She’s like, ‘Let the world weather you.’ The world is definitely weathering me right now.”
She described her personal style and glam preferences, saying she feels most confident with “pretty, wavy curly hair and a nice tan, freckles, a dewy cheek situation and obviously a lip liner.”
Carpenter added that her love of makeup began in childhood when her mother, a dancer, introduced her to costumes and performance looks.
Beyond beauty, Carpenter recently released her seventh studio album Man’s Best Friend on August 29. Featuring 12 tracks, the record explores themes of breakups, relationships, and personal struggles, presented in her characteristically playful lyrical style.
In a Q&A with Owen Thiele, Carpenter said she began writing the album immediately after finishing Short n’ Sweet. “There was some recurring themes, I thought, ‘I think this all goes together in one place and it should be while I’m still this confused and young,’” she explained.
Man’s Best Friend is available now across streaming platforms.
