Pakistan’s U-23 football team to kick off their AFC U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers today, taking on Iraq at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh. The match is set for 2:00 PM Pakistan Standard Time, marking the start of a crucial campaign for the Green Shirts.

Pakistan are placed in Group G alongside Iraq, hosts Cambodia, and Oman. Pakistan face a tough path to qualification. Only the group winners and the four best second-placed teams across Asia will advance to the 2026 AFC U-23 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, making each match decisive.

Pakistan's Head coach Nolberto Solano expressed pride in the squad while acknowledging the challenge ahead:

“It’s an honour to be here with the Pakistan team. We are playing against strong national teams like Iraq, Cambodia and Oman. The boys have been working really hard. We all believe, we all have a dream. It won’t be easy, but we are ready for the challenge,” Solano said.

Leading the team on the pitch is captain Haseeb Khan, who highlighted both the squad’s potential and the respect they hold for their opponents:

“We are a young and fresh team with good talent. I believe in my teammates. Iraq is a very respectable opponent, just like the others in our group. I’m excited and looking forward to a great game,” Khan said.

Pakistan arrived in Phnom Penh earlier this week following an intensive training camp in Islamabad. While the team lacks the experience of some regional rivals, Solano has focused on building discipline, teamwork, and confidence among his players.

Following today’s opener, Pakistan will face Cambodia on September 6 and conclude the group stage against Oman on September 9, with all matches at the Olympic Stadium.

For Pakistan, the match against Iraq represents more than just three points. It is an opportunity to measure progress, showcase talent, and take the first step toward making a mark in Asian football. The Green Shirts will be hoping their preparation, determination, and leadership can carry them to a strong start in Phnom Penh.
