Kai Cenat has provided a major update on his pledge to build a school in Nigeria, addressing the delays during the launch of his latest Twitch marathon, Mafiathon 3. The announcement comes after months of speculation from fans about the status of the project.
The Twitch streamer first visited Nigeria in March 2024, where he was shown a local school in Makoko with overcrowded classrooms.
Moved by the conditions, Cenat promised to provide support and later announced plans to build a new school. “Whatever they tell me you guys need, we’re gonna make sure you guys have [it],” he said during his visit.
Since then, fans have frequently questioned progress, with updates limited until Cenat paused Mafiathon 3 to clarify the situation.
Representatives from Banwo & Ighodalo and Enko Education, Fanny Moral and Chinedum Umeche, joined Cenat to explain that complications with land in Makoko had stalled development. Due to its location on waterways, construction was deemed unfeasible, leading the team to move the project to Yaba, Lagos. Students from Makoko will still receive free education once the school opens.
Cenat noted that “it’s impossible to build a new school from the ground up in under two years” if it is to be sustainable, adding that the aim is for the school to last “beyond me, beyond streaming.”
As part of Mafiathon 3, Cenat pledged 15% of revenue to the school project. If his target of 1 million Twitch subscribers is reached, it could raise around $750,000. The Kai Cenat Foundation Inc. has been established as a public charity to ensure transparency, with current funds reported at $1,134,453. Cenat also contributed $128,579 to provide computers to the existing school while work continues.
The total cost to complete the project is estimated at $5 million.
