BioWare has addressed the ongoing silence surrounding Mass Effect 5, explaining that development on the next entry in the long-running RPG series is continuing but remains in its early stages.

The game was first announced in 2020, but updates have been limited in recent years. The most recent official communication came in November last year.

In November, BioWare shared new concept art, and EA reiterated its commitment to the franchise despite wider restructuring within the studio.

Since then, there have been no major announcements beyond a recruitment listing for a senior development role.

Mass Effect franchise lead Mike Gamble responded to a fan query on social media, offering a brief explanation for the lack of updates. “Just busy workin,” Gamble wrote on X/Twitter. “Not a lot of time for tease.”

The comment reflects the studio’s focus on production rather than public updates at this stage of development.

The current phase follows a turbulent period for BioWare, which released Dragon Age: The Veilguard in late 2024 after a prolonged development cycle. The game received mixed reactions, and the aftermath led to workforce reductions.

EA later stated that Mass Effect 5 is still in early production, which accounts for the reduced staffing needs.

Despite the limited updates, several details about Mass Effect 5 have been shared over time. The game is expected to take place hundreds of years after Mass Effect 3, returning to the Milky Way following the defeat of the Reapers.

Previous narrative decisions are expected to have less direct impact due to the passage of time.

Confirmed returning elements include Liara, the geth, and references to the krogan following a civil war.

The game is also expected to feature the N7 programme and a new protagonist within its ranks. Romance systems and Paragon/Renegade-style choices are also expected to return.

Other related projects include Amazon Prime Video’s live-action Mass Effect series, which is set after Mass Effect 3 and aims to expand the universe ahead of the next game.
