Snoop Dogg has addressed criticism following comments he made about gender representation in Pixar’s Lightyear. The rapper, 53, was widely criticized after recounting on the It’s Giving podcast how he struggled to explain a same-sex couple featured in the film to his young grandson.
During the August 20 episode, Snoop, whose real name is Calvin Broadus Jr., said he was caught off guard when his grandson asked how two women could have a baby. “I didn’t come in for this,” he said. “These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.” He added that the moment left him “scared to go to the movies.”
His remarks drew swift backlash online, with some accusing him of homophobia and questioning why someone of his age was unable to talk to children about same-sex parents. The clip, initially left out of the full podcast episode, was later released as a YouTube short and went viral.
In response, Snoop commented on an August 27 Hollywood Unlocked Instagram post featuring trans activist T.S. Madison calling him out. “I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,” he wrote. “All my gay friends know what’s up. They been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-year-old. Teach me how to learn. I’m not perfect.”
Screenwriter Lauren Gunderson, who contributed to Lightyear, also responded to the controversy. In a Threads post, she defended the film’s LGBTQ+ inclusion and criticized Snoop’s remarks, writing, “Love is love... I hope he joins the side of Love.”
While some fans have accepted Snoop’s apology, others continue to express concern over the impact of his initial comments.
