House of the Dragon Season 3 will open directly after the dramatic conclusion of Season 2, with the long-anticipated Battle of the Gullet confirmed as the starting point.

The Season 2 finale left multiple storylines unresolved. Alicent Hightower allowed Rhaenyra Targaryen to take King’s Landing, King Aegon II abandoned the city, Otto Hightower was seen imprisoned, and Rhaena Targaryen located the dragon Sheepstealer. Meanwhile, Tyland Lannister led the Triarchy’s fleet towards the Velaryons and Corlys Velaryon, setting the stage for one of Westeros’ most pivotal sea battles.

Speaking to Collider ahead of the release of The Girlfriend, Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent, said: “Well, I think I can say for the show that it is, you know, it starts off with a bang. The first two eps were essentially supposed to be our finale last year. So you can just imagine coming into that sort of energy. It’s bigger and more ferocious than ever before, I think is what I can say.”

HBO executives have also confirmed the scale of the upcoming episodes. Francesca Orsi, head of drama at the network, told Deadline: “I was just on set and saw all the elements and what was behind it. I’m so glad we waited because it’s going to be better than ever, and I don’t think we had the time at that point to do what it is that we’ve achieved now this season.”

The production team includes Kevin de la Noy, who previously worked on Titanic, with his expertise helping to bring the large-scale naval sequence to life.

While fans eagerly await the premiere, the events of the Battle of the Gullet are expected to mark a major turning point in the Dance of the Dragons.
