Speculation over Donald Trump’s health and the question of what happens if a president dies in office has collided with new comments from Vice President JD Vance, who says his months in the role have prepared him for the ultimate responsibility. Vance stressed that Trump remains in good health, but his remarks have fuelled fresh debate about succession in Washington.

The US Constitution is clear. If a sitting president dies, the vice president is sworn in immediately. History has shown this transition eight times, most memorably in 1963 when Lyndon B Johnson was sworn in on Air Force One just hours after John F Kennedy’s assassination. Each time the focus has been continuity, but Trump’s presidency has heightened concerns that tradition and protocol may not unfold so smoothly.

Vance, just 41 and one of the youngest vice presidents in US history, has said his position has been the best on-the-job training he could have imagined. He described entering the Oval Office for the first time as humbling, though he admitted the room felt gloomy in winter before Trump brightened it up. “God forbid there’s a terrible tragedy, I can’t think of better training than what I’ve gotten,” he told USA Today, while emphasising that Trump is “incredibly good health” and expected to serve a full term.

Trump, meanwhile, has called Vance the most likely heir to his Make America Great Again movement, praising his rising influence and even floating a future ticket that could pair Vance with Secretary of State Marco Rubio. That endorsement has only strengthened speculation about how power could shift if Trump were suddenly unable to serve.

While many Americans still remember the unity after JFK’s death, today’s polarised climate suggests Trump’s passing would divide the nation. Some foresee a lavish state funeral; others expect fierce political battles over his legacy. For now, Trump remains alive and active, but the chatter shows no sign of slowing as succession looms larger in the public mind.
