Emma Stone sparked laughter and curiosity at the Venice Film Festival press conference for her new film Bugonia by admitting she believes in extraterrestrial life. The black comedy, directed by frequent collaborator Yorgos Lanthimos, explores otherworldly themes, including a storyline in which Stone plays a powerful CEO abducted by conspiracy theorists who think she’s an alien sent to destroy Earth.

When asked whether she believes in a higher intelligence “looking upon us,” Stone referenced famed astronomer Carl Sagan, saying his philosophies deeply influenced her views. “He very deeply believed the idea that we’re alone in this vast expansive universe — not that we’re being watched — is a pretty narcissistic thing,” she said. “So yes, I’m coming out and saying it, I believe in aliens!”

Lanthimos responded playfully, saying, “That’s a very complicated question to answer in a serious way,” avoiding a firm stance.

Stone was also asked how she manages fame without “turning into an alien.” She replied with a laugh, “How do you know I’m not an alien?” before reflecting more seriously on the disconnect between public perception and personal identity. She explained how fame can create a division between her public persona and her private self, noting, “There’s me, and then there’s me, here.”

Bugonia, which premieres in competition Thursday night at the festival, is an English-language remake of the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet! by Jang Joon-hwan. The script was adapted by The Menu co-writer Will Tracy. Alongside Stone, the cast includes Jesse Plemons, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias, and Alicia Silverstone.

Plemons, who plays a conspiracy theorist beekeeper, spoke about the importance of portraying misunderstood or unsettling characters, saying such roles allow him to explore parts of humanity that are “scary and hard to look at.”

Bugonia will debut in theaters on October 24.
