Microsoft investigating major Steam issues with Gears of War: Reloaded

Steam users are also frustrated by the lack of split-screen co-op on PC

Gears of War: Reloaded—a remaster of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition (itself a remaster of the original 2006 game)—launched on August 26 for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and, for the first time in franchise history, PlayStation 5. While the game offers a solid way to revisit the classic shooter, its PC launch has been plagued with technical issues, resulting in a flood of negative reviews on Steam.

As of August 27, the game holds a user score of just 49% on Steam. Players report frequent crashes, particularly when adjusting graphical settings. Strangely, some users noted the game ran fine at launch but became less stable over time. One potential workaround involves deleting a specific folder and avoiding Xbox Live—hinting at possible server-related problems.

Steam users are also frustrated by the lack of split-screen co-op on PC. According to player reports, split-screen was initially listed on the game’s Steam page and shown in trailers, only to be quietly removed later. Many now believe the feature was mistakenly advertised and never intended for the PC version, but the confusion has fueled player frustration.

The issues aren't limited to PC. On PS5, players—including the article’s author—have experienced crashes and inconsistent performance, while Xbox Series X players have reported a bizarre 120FPS bug during campaign mode. The PC version also lacks an FOV slider and has restrictions on keybinding, further frustrating fans.

A day-one patch was meant to fix many of these problems on both console and PC, but clearly didn’t address everything. On August 27, Xbox and developer The Coalition acknowledged the problems, stating they are investigating PC crashes, matchmaking errors, and missing pre-order cosmetic items.

Given that Reloaded is a remaster of a remaster, many players are surprised it launched in such an unstable state. For now, PC users in particular are left hoping future updates can fix what’s quickly becoming a rough reboot of a beloved classic.
