The South Asia & Southeast Asia Rice Molecular Design Breeding Network has been officially launched in Kunming, Yunnan, China.
It was established during the South Asia & Southeast Asia Upland Rice Network Annual Meeting held from August 19 to 22. The platform will support seed industry cooperation between China and countries across South and Southeast Asia.
Agricultural experts and scholars from more than ten countries, including China, Pakistan, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, attended the meeting to explore future cooperation in rice genetic resources and breeding technologies.
Organisers said the network will use Yunnan's position as a regional hub, the rich rice genetic resources of South and Southeast Asia, and China's expertise in molecular design breeding. The aim is to develop new rice varieties that can adapt to climate change and enhance food security.
