Prime Video is developing Dorothy, a contemporary, music-driven YA series inspired by L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz books.
The show is created and produced by Gina Matthews under her Little Engine banner and reimagines the classic story through a modern lens, using the Yellow Brick Road as a metaphor for the challenges and choices faced by young adults today.
Executive producers include Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton of Lucky Horseshoe, Lee Metzger, Grant Scharbo, and Patrick Moran.
Matthews said, “The Wizard of Oz has been a part of my life since childhood. Dorothy represents strength and resilience, showing that kindness and determination can help us achieve great things while lifting up those around us. I’m thrilled to bring that message to a new audience today.”
Moran added that collaborating with this team to reimagine a cherished story is an exciting opportunity. Scharbo emphasized that the series is poised to captivate a new generation of viewers with its mix of music, emotion, and relatable themes.
Shelton shared that he immediately saw how Stefani’s creativity would connect with the project. Stefani herself described the series as “a modern take on a classic story that blends music and emotion with Dorothy’s timeless character,” calling the opportunity inspiring.
Stefani, a three-time Grammy winner and long-time The Voice coach, previously produced the animated series Kuu Kuu Harajuku.
Shelton, a nine-time Grammy nominee and platinum-selling artist, has also produced holiday movies for Hallmark and USA Network while coaching on The Voice from 2011 through 2023.
Matthews’ production credits include films such as 13 Going on 30 and Isn’t It Romantic, as well as TV series like The Mountain and Popular. The upcoming series aims to deliver a fresh, musical, and emotionally rich adaptation of a beloved classic.
