Final Fantasy 14 on PS4 nearing hardware limits as Square Enix discusses future platform support

Final Fantasy 14 has been available on PlayStation 4 for more than a decade, but its future on Sony’s last-generation console is becoming uncertain. Director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida recently addressed the issue in an interview with Feed4Gamers, noting that the MMORPG is approaching the PS4’s technical limits.
“My basic stance is that I do want to continue supporting hardware which has grown old,” Yoshida said. “But I do have one concern, and that’s regarding the OS of the PlayStation 4, and this is regarding the hardware regulations which were made by Sony. These regulations are related to the limit of the data, and because there’s that limit of the data, well, we are continually incorporating updates for Final Fantasy 14 and we are now approaching that limit.”
According to Yoshida, Square Enix has been granted special allowances by Sony Interactive Entertainment to exceed some of the platform’s restrictions, but even those exceptions are now reaching their boundaries.
“I will repeat myself: I do want to provide support for platforms as long as possible. However, there will eventually come a time when the hardware is at its limits in terms of its technology, and at that point in time we would have to provide an end to the service on that hardware,” he added.
The game most recently received patch 7.3, The Promise of Tomorrow, following last year’s Dawntrail expansion. Square Enix has not confirmed the release window for the next major expansion, though Yoshida indicated that further details may be revealed during Fan Fest 2026, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of A Realm Reborn.
Final Fantasy 14 previously ended PlayStation 3 support in 2017 with the arrival of the Stormblood expansion.
While PS4 support continues for now, Yoshida confirmed that players will receive clear notice when the eventual transition away from the console becomes necessary.
