Alex Garland is directing a live-action Elden Ring movie for A24, and according to a new profile in The New Yorker, his enormous first draft helped seal the deal.

At first glance, a collaboration between A24—known for indie arthouse hits—and Elden Ring, one of the most iconic RPGs of the 2020s, seems unlikely. But with video game adaptations becoming increasingly successful (see The Super Mario Bros. Movie), A24 saw potential in bringing FromSoftware’s epic to the big screen.

Garland, a longtime fan who’s beaten the game six times, pitched the idea directly to A24’s head of film, Noah Sacco. After a phone call and a visit to Garland’s London home, Sacco was shown the game’s world firsthand. Its dark fantasy aesthetic reminded him of The Lord of the Rings films—and he was immediately on board. “F**k yeah,” he replied.

Working on spec (without an official commission), Garland wrote a 160-page script accompanied by 40 pages of imagery, aiming to impress Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki. After travelling to Japan to meet him, Garland successfully secured Miyazaki’s approval, setting the project in motion.

The film remains tightly under wraps. As of now, the only confirmed cast member is Heartstopper’s Kit Connor, with Civil War and Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny rumoured to join.

Given Garland’s other commitments—including the upcoming 28 Years Later trilogy, with its second instalment releasing in 2026—it may be some time before more details about Elden Ring surface. But with A24, Garland, and Miyazaki involved, expectations are high for what could be one of the most ambitious video game adaptations to date.
