Tax-free contraceptives hailed as milestone

The Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Coalition on Population, led by the Population Council in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has expressed its deep appreciation to the prime minister and the finance minister for abolishing all taxes on contraceptives.

This landmark decision will make family planning more accessible and affordable for low-income households — those with the greatest unmet need — helping to reduce unintended pregnancies and enabling families to plan the number of children following their resources. The measure is expected to yield significant improvements in maternal and child health, paving the way for a healthier and more prosperous Pakistan.

At present, 53% of couples — across all income levels — procure contraceptives from pharmacies, shops, and the private sector. This substantial majority will benefit directly from the tax exemption. With an unmet need of 17% for contraceptives, women are disproportionately affected, often facing repeated pregnancies and carrying the considerable responsibility of caring for their families.
