Arsenal close in on Piero Hincapie transfer after Fabrizio Romano update on Bayer Leverkusen defender

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has reported that Arsenal are closing in on Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, with the Ecuador international giving the green light to the move. Personal terms have already been agreed on a long-term contract, marking a major step forward in negotiations.
Arsenal plan to submit an opening proposal structured as a loan with an obligation to buy. This approach offers financial flexibility while ensuring they secure a left-footed defender highly valued by manager Mikel Arteta. According to reports, Arsenal have also moved ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham in the race for Hincapie’s signature after reaching an agreement in principle earlier this week.
Progress now depends on finalising terms directly with Leverkusen. The deal is expected to include obligation triggers, payment structures, and potential add-ons. Meanwhile, Jakub Kiwior’s expected move to FC Porto remains a key factor, as Arsenal want to balance defensive depth without inflating squad numbers.
For Arteta, Hincapie represents an ideal fit on the left side of defence. The 22-year-old is comfortable stepping into midfield, carrying the ball forward, and defending in one-on-one situations—traits vital to Arsenal’s system. His versatility to play as both a centre-back and left-back, along with his recovery pace, makes him a strong addition alongside William Saliba, Gabriel, Riccardo Calafiori, and Jurrien Timber.
With the player’s approval already secured, Arsenal are optimistic the move will be finalised once agreement is reached with Leverkusen and Kiwior’s exit is completed. If all goes according to plan, Hincapie would provide balance, tactical flexibility, and added strength to Arsenal’s back line ahead of their title challenge.
