Spotify has introduced a new in-app messaging feature, allowing users to send direct messages to one another without leaving the platform. The feature, called Messages, is rolling out this week to mobile users aged 16 and over in select markets.

Until now, Spotify users could share music, podcasts and audiobooks through third-party apps such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook. With Messages, Spotify is offering a built-in way to recommend content directly in the app.

According to the company, the update is designed “to give users what they want and make those moments of connection more seamless and streamlined in the Spotify app.”

Users will be able to message people they have interacted with on Spotify before, such as through Jams, Blends and Collaborative Playlists, or those who share a Family or Duo plan.

The feature also includes moderation tools. Users can accept or reject message requests, block accounts and report content. Spotify confirmed that its Terms of Use and Platform Rules apply, and that it will use “proactive detection technology to scan messages for certain unlawful and harmful content.” Messages will be encrypted both in transit and at rest.

To send a message, users can tap the share icon in the “Now Playing” view, choose a recipient and hit send. Recipients who accept a request can reply with text or emoji reactions.
