It’s unlikely we’ll see Portal 3 from Valve anytime soon, but thanks to a new fan project, you can now experience the next best thing—inside Minecraft. A newly released project called Portal: Java Edition brings the full Portal 2 experience into Minecraft: Java Edition, complete with 50 puzzles and a custom level editor.
Released on August 22 by a team of over 20 modders and fan developers, Portal: Java Edition is a free remake of Valve’s 2011 puzzle classic, built entirely in vanilla Minecraft. Technically, it doesn't require any traditional mods—just clever use of resource and data packs. That said, the creators recommend installing a few third-party mods for performance optimization, since the project is quite demanding and can cause lag even on high-end PCs.
Development on the project began back in 2020 and has taken roughly five years to complete. It includes all the core mechanics from Portal 2: portals, lasers, light bridges, propulsion and repulsion gels, and more. The remake ships with 50 handcrafted levels across eight map packs, faithfully reimagining the Portal experience in blocky form.
If that’s not enough, the mod also includes a built-in level editor, allowing players to design and share their own puzzle maps. For veteran Minecraft players, building levels should feel familiar, as the editor blends seamlessly into Minecraft’s building systems—just with a few extra elements like red buttons, turrets, and companion cubes.
To try it out, you’ll need to own Minecraft: Java Edition on PC and download the necessary files from the project’s GitHub page. It may also require rolling back to an older version of Minecraft, which is easily done through the official launcher.
As more players jump in and start building, don’t be surprised if you stumble across fan-made recreations of DOOM’s E1M1 or Super Mario Bros. levels—just with a few more portals.
