Following the recent monsoon rains, millions of tons of garbage from Karachi's stormwater drains have made their way into the sea, posing a severe threat to marine life and the environment. The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has launched a large-scale "Post-Rain Cleanup" campaign on the directives of Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.
The cleanup drive is being carried out across various sections of the port, including berths, jetties, and navigation channels. According to sources in the Marine Protection Department, more than 150 tons of waste have already been removed in the first phase, and teams are working around the clock to clear the water of pollutants.
Officials said the inflow of rainwater into rivers and nullahs during monsoon season carries massive amounts of solid waste into the Arabian Sea.
