KARACHI:

A speeding passenger bus crushed two motorcycles near the Drigh Road underpass on Sharae Faisal, leaving three people dead on the spot, including a Pakistan Navy employee, and injuring one woman on Monday.

According to police, the accident occurred when the brakes of the passenger Mazda failed. The bus was immediately seized, and the driver arrested. Officials said stagnant rainwater and mud in the underpass also contributed to the tragedy.

The deceased were identified as 60-year-old Seema, her 24-year-old son Muhammad Shoaib, and 42-year-old Haris. The injured woman was Shoaib's 24-year-old wife, Naila. Police reported that Shoaib, a resident of Shah Latif Town and a Navy employee, was riding with his mother and wife when they were struck. Both he and his mother died instantly, while Naila was critically injured. Haris, riding another motorcycle, was a resident of Agra Taj Colony, Lyari.

Edhi ambulances shifted the bodies and injured to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre. SHO Sharae Faisal Iftikhar Ahmed Arain confirmed the victims' identities.

The arrested driver told police that after the brakes failed, he attempted to slow the vehicle by downshifting, but the gears did not engage, leading to the crash. Legal proceedings have been initiated.

Meanwhile, SO Aziz of Sharae Faisal traffic section claimed the motorcycles had slipped on the muddy road before being hit by the bus. He added that the authorities had been informed about the drainage issue, and work was under way.

In a separate incident near Qayyumabad Chowrangi, a motorcyclist, 25-year-old Muhammad Usman, son of Abdul Rasheed, was seriously injured after being hit by a water tanker.
