'Fasting Buddha' replica unveiled at Cambodian museum

In a significant gesture of cultural diplomacy, Pakistan gifted a replica of the iconic 'Fasting Buddha' sculpture from the ancient Gandhara civilisation to Cambodia, where the revered artefact was formally unveiled the National Museum of Cambodia, state media reported on Friday.

The handover ceremony at the National Museum of Cambodia, supported by Cambodia's Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, was attended by high-ranking government officials and members of the diplomatic corps.

In a formal presentation, the Pakistan Ambassador Zaheeruddin Babar Thaheem, handed the artefact to Cambodian Culture Minister Phoeurng Sackona, officially placing the replica within the museum's esteemed collection.

Minister Sackona characterised the gift as a powerful symbol of shared heritage, friendship, and faith, which "elegantly links Cambodia's profound Buddhist traditions with the ancient Gandhara civilization of Pakistan."

"Cambodia deeply values its friendship with Pakistan, a relationship strengthened by our common vision of peace, prosperity, and regional understanding," Sackona said. "This act of cultural exchange reflects the true spirit of diplomacy, where friendship is nurtured not only through political and economic cooperation but also through the sharing of cultural values, spiritual traditions, and human aspirations."

Echoing these sentiments, Ambassador Thaheem highlighted the profound significance of the sculpture. He noted that the exquisite work of art reflects the rich tapestry of a shared Buddhist heritage and symbolises the enduring bonds of friendship and goodwill between the peoples of Pakistan and Cambodia.

"The Fasting Buddha represents a profound journey of self-discovery and enlightenment, embodying the timeless values of compassion, peace, and unity," the ambassador stated. "These are principles that resonate deeply with the people of both our nations and serve as a foundation for our continued partnership."

The replica of the Fasting Buddha, a Gandhara-era sculpture renowned for its evocative depiction of asceticism on the path to enlightenment, is now on public display at the National Museum of Cambodia. It offers visitors a tangible connection to a shared historical and spiritual legacy, marking a new chapter in the cultural relationship between the two countries.
