As part of an initiative to cleanse Hudiara drain in Lahore of industrial and toxic waste as per provincial authorities' and court directives, Punjab Environment Director General Imran Hamid Sheikh has collected water samples to assess the level and nature of contamination.
An inspection team visited the drain and nearby industrial units, a number of which were found discharging untreated effluents into the drain.
Officials warned that such practices are not only polluting water resources but also contributing to air pollution.
Sheikh confirmed that several housing societies and factories have already been issued legal notices.
He noted that Hudiara drain, originally a seasonal rainwater channel, has gradually transformed into a heavily polluted watercourse due to unchecked industrial waste.
"The government is determined to restore this drain to its natural condition with the support of all relevant institutions," he said, adding that the environment protection department is leading the efforts and exploring scientific and technological solutions to curb pollution effectively.
According to the DG, as many as 450 wastewater-generating units have been identified across Punjab, out of which 137 have been served with notices so far.
He expressed hope that sustained efforts would soon yield tangible results in curbing pollution.
