Hollow Knight: Silksong, the long-awaited sequel to Team Cherry’s hit Metroidvania, is set to release on September 4 2025, but the developers have already confirmed that the launch is just the beginning.

In an interview with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, co-founders Ari Gibson and William Pellen revealed that downloadable content is already in development and that they plan to support the game for years to come.

The confirmation comes eight years after the release of the original Hollow Knight, a title that grew into one of the most acclaimed indie games of its generation.

Silksong itself was originally conceived as an expansion to the first game before evolving into a standalone project.

When asked about the future, the developers explained that their work will not stop with release day.

“Launching it is obviously quite exciting,” Pellen said. “What comes after for us is equally as exciting.” Gibson added that “some of the plans for that stuff are kind of ambitious as well,” signalling that post-launch updates could grow beyond traditional add-ons.

According to Schreier’s report, the team has enjoyed the advantage of working without deadlines or strict financial constraints, which allowed the game to expand far beyond its original scope. The same approach appears to be shaping Silksong’s post-release roadmap.

The developers have previously faced criticism from some fans when discussing additional content before the base game was finished, with players urging them to focus on launch.

Now, with the release date just days away, Team Cherry has made it clear that they have no intention of stepping away from the Hollow Knight series.

Silksong’s arrival marks a major milestone for the studio, but as Gibson and Pellen emphasised, the journey will continue well beyond September, with “big plans” for years of future updates.
