Authorities are investigating the death of wrestling icon Hulk Hogan as a potential case of medical malpractice, according to new information reported by TMZ Sports. Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, passed away on July 24 at his home in Clearwater, Florida.
The Clearwater Police Department confirmed Thursday that the investigation remains ongoing. “We have been in communication with family members — including his son, Nick, and daughter, Brooke,” the department said in a statement to TMZ. “The unique nature of this case has required us to interview multiple witnesses and seek medical records from a variety of providers, and our detectives continue to do that.”
Law enforcement sources told that an occupational therapist was present at Hogan’s residence when he suddenly stopped breathing as per TMZ. The therapist reportedly informed responding officers that Hogan may have been the victim of medical malpractice. Specifically, the therapist alleged that a surgeon may have severed Hogan’s phrenic nerve during a recent operation—either a heart surgery or a neck procedure.
The phrenic nerve plays a critical role in breathing by controlling the diaphragm. Sources said Hogan did not experience chest pain or any typical warning signs prior to his death, but simply ceased breathing. His wife, Sky Hogan, reportedly called 911 after noticing he was unresponsive.
Sky Hogan confirmed to TMZ Sports that her husband’s phrenic nerve had been "compromised" during surgery. She also stated that an autopsy had been conducted but did not disclose its findings. As of her last update, Hogan's body had not yet been cremated.
Hogan’s daughter, Brooke, has publicly called for an autopsy as the family seeks clarity on the circumstances surrounding the wrestling legend’s sudden passing. Police noted that body cam footage may contain relevant conversations with the therapist present at the scene.
