The Outer Worlds 2 will release on October 29 2025, Obsidian Entertainment confirmed at Gamescom 2025. The long-awaited sequel to the 2019 RPG introduces new characters, expanded worlds, and more gameplay systems while remaining a single-player experience.
First announced in 2021, the game has received several trailers over the years. The debut teaser in June 2021 openly admitted that development was still in early stages.
A gameplay trailer followed at The Game Awards 2024, showing combat and confirming a 2025 release window. The Xbox Games Showcase 2025 highlighted gunplay, villains, and settings, while Gamescom 2025 introduced new companions.
Set in a different region of the universe, The Outer Worlds 2 follows an Earth Directorate agent investigating rifts that threaten the galaxy.
These events unfold against a backdrop of conflict between three factions: the Protectorate, a rebellious scientific religious order, and a corporate mega-power. Obsidian confirmed that player choices will influence how the struggle for control plays out.
The game is expected to be twice the size of the first entry, offering a longer main storyline alongside numerous side quests.
Gameplay remains first-person action RPG with guns, melee weapons, grenades, and dialogue-driven skill checks. Players will again be able to shape their character’s personality, ranging from heroic to comically foolish.
Companions play a central role in the sequel, with five confirmed so far: Niles and Valerie from the Earth Directorate, Aza from The Glorious Dawn, Inez from Auntie’s Choice, and Tristan from the Protectorate.
Developers noted that companions will have distinct traits, goals, and backgrounds, but romance options will not be available.
The Outer Worlds 2 will be released on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam and the Xbox app. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass from day one.
