The second season of Peacemaker has landed with a bang — and critics are loving it.

HBO Max’s irreverent anti-hero series has returned to screens with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a rare feat in the world of superhero television. The acclaim is striking not only because of the numbers, but also because of the context.

When Peacemaker first premiered in 2022, it arrived before James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of the DC Universe. Many fans feared that the show’s future might be reshaped — or sidelined — under the duo’s ambitious new blueprint for DC storytelling.

Instead, Peacemaker season 1 was folded into the new canon, and now, season 2 appears to have exceeded expectations. Critics are quick to point out that Gunn resisted the temptation of turning the series into a dense web of multiverse lore. Paste Magazine wrote that “it would have been easy for Gunn to get caught up in the world-building of his fresh DC universe, but this is still the Peacemaker fans fell in love with back in 2022.”

TheWrap highlighted how the series balances humour with depth: “The gags and gore remain plentiful, but they’re not the dominant takeaways this time. Gunn even finds emotional resonance in the multiverse concept — something Marvel, for all its efforts in that dimension, has so far failed to locate.” RogerEbert.com praised the series as “a standout in superhero television” that doesn’t lose sight of its scrappy origins.

Collider, meanwhile, drew comparisons to Gunn’s broader DC work: “Gunn’s Superman was fantastic… but Peacemaker season 2 shows that he truly has a gift for creating superhero stories centring around broken characters.”Early impressions also suggest that this second chapter is darker in tone. Some reviewers describe it as “darker and sadder” than the debut season, though still full of outrageous humour and bone-crunching action that won fans over in the first place.
