Depalpur faces sale of sewage-tainted vegetables
The sale of vegetables cultivated with sewage water continues in various parts of the city, raising health concerns among residents.
Health experts warned that the consumption of such vegetables could lead to life-threatening diseases.
According to local sources, farmers in different localities of Depalpur are reportedly using sewage water to irrigate their fields.
Vegetables grown with this contaminated water mature more quickly but are considered hazardous to health.
Despite the risks, these vegetables are being sold openly in local markets.
Medical experts caution that sewage water often contains heavy metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium, along with toxic industrial waste, which seep into the soil and are absorbed by vegetables.
This contaminated produce may carry harmful bacteria, viruses and germs, causing diseases such as hepatitis, typhoid and other gastrointestinal infections.
Prolonged exposure to heavy metals can damage the kidneys, liver and brain, and may even lead to cancer.
A resident urged the authorities to take immediate action.
A doctor demanded that the use of sewage water for cultivation be declared illegal, crops irrigated with contaminated water be destroyed, and strict legal measures taken against violators to safeguard public health.
