Dave Mustaine, founder and frontman of Megadeth, has confirmed that the band’s upcoming studio album and 2026 world tour will be their last.
In a social media announcement to fans and the “Cyber Army,” the band’s mascot Vic Rattlehead “spoke” for the first time, though the words were Mustaine’s own.
“There’s so many musicians that have come to the end of their career, whether accidental or intentional. Most of them don’t get to go out on their own terms on top, and that’s where I’m at in my life right now,” he said. Mustaine reflected on his decades in music, his global fanbase, and the difficulty of saying goodbye.
“We can’t wait for you to hear this album and see us on tour. This is also a perfect time for us to tell you that it’s our last studio album."
Formed in 1983 after Mustaine’s departure from Metallica, Megadeth became a cornerstone of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax. With 16 studio albums — five certified platinum in the U.S. — the band’s history includes political lyrics, technical innovation, and enduring influence on the guitar world.
The current lineup features Mustaine, bassist James LoMenzo, guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari and drummer Dirk Verbeuren. Album artwork for the final record has been revealed, though the title remains under wraps.
